PRE: Age Certificate

As our genre is Horror, there are loads of different aspects which may effect young people which is why age restrictions should be in place.
British Board of Film Classification The organisation that is in charge of securing that each film has a specific Age Certificate is the BBFC. A non-govenrment run organisation which is funded by the film industry to judge films to suite certain acts and laws. Given guidelines to follow to ensure that its fair and valid, these guidelines cover:
Suitable for All

Parental Guidence

Suitable for 12 years and over

Suitable for 15 years and over

Suitable only for Adults
Guidlines vary between each age restriction. We believe that if the bbfc were to judge our film teaser trailer and eventually the film that it would be given an age rating of 15.

Discrimination
The work as a whole must not endorse discriminatory language or behavoiour. The whole teaser trailer is based around abnormal behaviours which could be seen as discriminatory.

Drugs
Drug taking may be shown but the film as a whole must not promote or encourage drug misuse. The misuse of easily accessible and highly dangerous substances (for example, aerosols or solvents) is unlikely to be acceptable. We show no drug use so this would not be relevent.
Horror
Strong threat and menace are permitted unless sadistic or sexualised. The Scenes show only a minute section of what the whole film may contain which could be seen as sadistic to some viewers.

Imitable behaviour
Dangerous behaviour (for example, hanging, suicide and self-harming) should not dwell on detail which could be copied. Easily accessible weapons should not be glamorised. The use of weapons are used throughout the film, and torture is also shown which may be offensive, there is also implications of more drastic scenes which havent been shown.

Language
There may be frequent use of strong language (for example, ‘fuck’). The strongest terms (for example, ‘cunt’) may be acceptable if justified by the context. Aggressive or repeated use of the strongest language is unlikely to be acceptable. Within the teaser trailer, no strong language is shown, however its implied that within the whole film strong language could be used. Aggressive language will be used to an extent which again could be offensive to anyone below the age of 15.
NudityNudity may be allowed in a sexual context but without strong detail. There are no constraints on nudity in a non-sexual or educational context. There are no nude scenes shot within the trailer, although that doesnt disreguard any which may be shown within the film.
Sex
Sexual activity may be portrayed without strong detail. There may be strong verbal references to sexual behaviour, but the strongest references are unlikely to be acceptable unless justified by context. Works whose primary purpose is sexual arousal or stimulation are unlikely to be acceptable. Sex is not relevent to our teaser trailer, although there are relationships shown which could imply that sex could be implied within the film.
ThemeNo theme is prohibited, provided the treatment is appropriate for 15 year olds. Our theme would relate to fears which can relate to any age group, although because of its explicity it would only be appropriate for 15 years and over.
ViolenceViolence may be strong but should not dwell on the infliction of pain or injury. The strongest gory images are unlikely to be acceptable. Strong sadistic or sexualised violence is also unlikely to be acceptable. There may be detailed verbal references to sexual violence but any portrayal of sexual violence must be discreet and have a strong contextual justification. Violence is very evident within the teaser trailer which means that it would be offensive and explicit as torture scenes may show the gory and sadistic side too much for anyone under the age of 15.

PRE: Possible Sound

We created this using garageband before we had filmed our final piece, we wanted something to work with and the pace and tempo of the piece matched well with our sub genre although it was not in time with any of our storyboards and we thought about adapting it for the final piece.

PRE: Inspirational shots

We have all been watching horror films much more now that our production revolves around them and assessing the trailers and teaser trailers in order to see how representative they are and how they use their shots to represent what they want, here are just a few significant shots which we have found interesting and hope to use similarly:

This shot is taken from the film Silence of the Lambs. This shows a point of view shot which is using the effect of a nightvision camera. Not only has the effect been added, its also as if you are looking through binoculars. This could be used effectively within our teaser trailer although not
using the nightvision effect. This also implicates the concept of male gaze, whereby the antagonist being male is watching the girl shown in the frame which again can suit our teaser trailer as there is a subtle hint considering its so obvious.

This is a shot taken from Dread the Movie. This here is showing probably the bloodiest scene throughout the whole film, which says alot about the film. It doesnt rely heavily on the amounts of blood to give a scary effect, and its even in black and white which means that from this single shot it's not particulary blood. This also shows a butchers knife which is our main weapon used within our teaser trailer.

Here is another scene from the film dread, Its a torture scene although its not what you would usually see. She is not forced to sit in a certain way and is not forced to actually do anything, she has just been left in a room with her worst fear. She seems normal but its probably the worst type of torture. There is a blue tinge to the camera lense and because of the positioning of the camera its as if the shot is a CCTV camera which is watching her constantly. The footage is an example of the type of setting intended for our teaser trailer. The dark and isolated setting links back to the different conventions of horror we researched during the holidays, and now have decided to use it for our teaser trailer. The position in which the character is in gives the impression of torture and anxiety. This is the type of connotation we intend to create in our teaser trailer.

Here is a still shot taken from The Hills have Eyes 2 teaser trailer, which is similar influential as we thought about using a shot tracking the feet to foreshadow something will be occurring, this shot is very messy and is in a very different setting although the shot is being tracked very well and it smooth which is what we hoped to achieve without having to use the track as it would be in shot.

This is a shot from 'Evil Dead' famous for its low angle shots which give the impressions that there are spirits within the trees making them tie up and rape the victims. This shot was very effective as it was almost following the spirit or even that it was the spirit which moved towards the shrubs in a quick move to focus on the ideal object. The shot seems hard to achieve at a good level, although we are thinking of using something similar.

PRE: Poster Designs

Here are some of our poster designs, they are very rough and we hadn't progressed our ideas to their full extent which is why we are gaining more and more ideas the longer we spend on them.

When at the Studio, we found a hole which suited the set of a horror films perfectly. We took several shots and even thought about using the picture as a poster image.

There were lots of big trees which again could symbolise a horror film and set the scene, after looking at some of the close up's we also are thinking about trying it out as a poster.

Below are loads of different sketches of an eye, we are hoping top include an eye into the front cover although it might mean taken some trial pictures and using them. We are unsure of how close we want the eye to be which is why we will need to test some shots out. Here are some possibilities:
There is also lots of writing which is shown on  the face, although an eye can be very effective, our sub genre is psychological thriller which isn't portrayed much through the use of an eye so by including loads of words which are significant then we are merging a sense of craziness and almost paranoia.

PRE: Shot Explainations

We have looked at a very wide range of shots to use in our teaser trailer to hopefully make it as effective as possible, this post will explain them and show you some of the things we have tested out.

Close Up Shot, we wanted to use this as a way of expressing Non verbal communication in the best possible way.

Extreme Close Up, we thought about using a close up shot as they can be very symbolic. This shot here is very representative of fear which is something we wanted to portray.

Tilt Shot, by using a wider variation of shots our teaser trailer could be more effective.

High Angle, This shot could be edited and manipulated into the CCTV shot.

Panning, this is a good way of showing the setting of a place.

PRE: Lighting practise

We have thought about our genre, and because of it being horror there will be a lot of pressure to get the lighting correct. We thought that by taking some shots using different angles of lighting we would be able to get its full understanding and increase the quality of our shots.

We began by closing all of the windows, curtains and doors and turning of the lights and used the LED 16x9 to experiment different angles and positions of lighting. Our first shot instantly brought the flash up meaning that that the photo was very bright, we tried to change the mode of the camera and experienced the same thing.
Here are some of our outcomes:

After speaking to our teachers we were informed about shutter speed and ISO and how they effect the quality of the picture depending on the amount of light. At the begginging our ISO setting was 100 which meant that there wasnt enough light so by opening one of the curtains slightly and changing the IOS setting to 400 which means that our shots were much clearer and allowed us to get less blurry shots.
Here are some Examples:

This overall experience has improved our photography skills and also highlighted the full impact on lighting and how hard it is to create the correct lighting effect for your shot.

PRE: Shot Practise Photographs

Here are shots of us Practicing our shots using our storyboard and shooting script as a basis, We wanted to get used to using the camera and thought that we could gain a head start by being able to begin editing our shots together and creating a basic, rough cut.

Here you can see that we had to use our imagination and create ways in which our shot could come out as best as possible. This is a graphics folder placed on top of the tracking roller which meant that the tracks would not be in shot and that we were able to actually get the footage we wanted.
